The Work in Writing.
Asset protection planning starts with understanding, not paperwork. Jim writes to give clients and their advisors the framework before the first meeting — so that the conversation begins at a higher level and the plan that follows is better for it.
Why Jim Writes
An Informed Client Makes Better Decisions.
Most clients arrive at an estate planning or asset protection engagement with a general sense that they need to do something and very little understanding of what that something is. They have heard about trusts. They know offshore planning exists. They have a vague awareness that their current structure — a will, perhaps an LLC — may not be adequate. What they lack is a framework for evaluating their own situation and asking the right questions.
Jim writes to close that gap. The books and articles on this page are not marketing materials. They are substantive treatments of the law, the planning techniques, and the practical considerations that determine whether a plan works. A client who has read the relevant material before the first meeting arrives with a vocabulary, a set of questions, and a realistic sense of what planning can and cannot accomplish. That client gets a better plan.
The same is true for advisors. A CPA who understands the mechanics of a Cook Islands trust can have a more productive conversation with a client about whether offshore planning is appropriate. A financial planner who understands the interaction between asset protection and estate planning can identify clients who need a referral before the problem becomes urgent. Jim writes for that audience as well.

For Advisors
How Professionals Use Jim's Work With Their Clients.
CPAs, financial planners, wealth managers, and attorneys regularly refer clients to Jim's books as preparation for an engagement — or as a resource for clients who are not yet ready to begin planning but need to understand what planning involves. The books are written to be accessible to a sophisticated non-lawyer without sacrificing accuracy or depth.
Jim also works directly with advisors who want to understand the planning techniques well enough to identify clients who need a referral. A financial planner who recognizes that a client's concentrated stock position, professional liability exposure, and approaching estate tax threshold all point toward a comprehensive planning engagement is more valuable to that client than one who sees only the investment management question. Jim is available to speak with advisors about specific client situations on a no-fee basis.
For advisors who want to go deeper, Jim's speaking engagements and CLE presentations cover the same material in a structured format designed for professional audiences. See the Speaking page for upcoming programs and to inquire about a presentation for your firm or organization.
